20 Mind-Blowing Wood Carvings By Gabi Rizea That Redefine The Art Of Sculpture
Some see a tree stump as the end of a tree’s story, but for Romanian artist Gabi Rizea, it’s just the beginning of something magical. With a chainsaw as his brush and wood as his canvas, Rizea transforms abandoned stumps into sculptures that feel alive with character and history.
Rizea discovered his talent in 2014 (in his late 30s) while experimenting with a chainsaw on a wooden block. His first attempt, a carved face, surprised him with how well it turned out. From whimsical woodland creatures to intricately carved human faces, each piece carries a sense of timelessness, as if it has always belonged to the landscape. The textures of the wood, the natural curves, and the careful detailing all blend together to create works that are both rustic and refined.
The artist says, “I don’t know, in my mind sometimes I have some images. When I work, it’s me, the log, and God.” This heartfelt statement reveals how his creative process is deeply intuitive and almost spiritual. Rizea also describes some practical challenges behind his work: “I sometimes make sketches of the designs I want to carve, but in 99% of cases, the wood just doesn’t match my ideas.” He often has to adapt his vision to the unique shape and condition of each stump.
Rizea’s art is more than decoration; it’s a way of preserving nature’s legacy. Instead of letting old stumps decay unnoticed, he turns them into landmarks, pieces of public art that invite passersby to stop, smile, and maybe even run their hands over the smooth carvings.
Here are some of his most stunning creations, each one proving that even in endings, there’s space for beauty, creativity, and new beginnings.
