This Artist Tried Imagining How The Avengers Cast Would Have Looked In The 90s
While some people are excited about the new season of Game of Thrones, others are equally excited about the final installment of the Avengers series – Endgame. It’s been a little over a week and the movie already grossed over $2.2 billion, making it the second highest-grossing film of all time, just a little behind Avatar. It was the excellent choice of cast that lead to the series’ incredible success – but do you think the films would have been as successful if the cast was entirely different?
Digital artist Mat, known as houseofmat online, tried reimagining what the cast of Avengers would have looked like if the movies were made in the 90s. Forget about Chris Hemsworth and Robert Downey Jr. – think more like Brad Pitt and David Duchovny!
Denzel Washington as Black Panther, David Duchovny as The Hulk, Alicia Silverstone as Scarlet Witch, and Ben Stiller as Antman
In an interview with Bored Panda, Mat said he has been drawing since he was a kid but only returned to art after college. He studied Tourism and Hotel Management but wanted to go back to creating art so he decided to study Graphic Design for a masters degree.
“I usually work on superheroes, comics, games, cartoon characters as a concept illustrator,” said the artist. “My purpose is creating undone artworks to leave a footprint to the art world.”
Eddie Murphy as Falcon, Tom Cruise as Iron Man, and Brad Pitt as Thor
Since the artist was born in 1987, the 90s culture had a strong impact on his childhood. Mat says his favorite hero is Iron Man for showing how a “human” can deal with other superheroes and villains. “He’s got no superpowers. He has my complete respect,” says the artist.
Dolph Lundgren as Vision, Leonardo DiCaprio as Captain America, Johnny Depp as Hawkeye, Cuba Gooding, Jr. as War Machine, and Sandra Bullock as Wasp
Each of the posters takes the artist about 4 hours in Photoshop but some can take up to seven. “It depends on the details,” says Mat. “Some artworks need more attention and detail on it.”
Michael J. Fox as Spider-Man, Sharon Stone as Pepper Potts, Brendan Fraser as Star Lord, and Keanu Reeves as Dr. Strange
“I started “houseofmat” on Instagram in 2016 and my specific artworks such as “90’s Avengers” helped me to grow,” says the artist. “This series gained a lot of attention and began to trend. Stan Lee’s official website even published my artwork. That was an unforgettable moment for me.”
The artist does not plan to stop creating art and says he has a lot of plans this year. “I’m waiting a little bit for new artworks because I do not want to spoil anything about Endgame,” says Mat. “I also have lots of ideas about the 90s. Thanks to all of my followers for their support.”
