20 Papier-Mâché Creatures By Roberto Benavidez That Are Purely Magical
When it comes to creating art that feels alive, Roberto Benavidez has carved out a truly magical space for himself. His papier-mâché creatures shimmer with detail, color, and wonder, proving that even humble materials like paper and paste can be transformed into something extraordinary.
Benavidez did not begin with papier-mâché. “I started using the piñata technique as the base for my sculptures beginning in 2009,” he told DeMilked. “Prior to that I was working in bronze.” Everything shifted when he came across a piñata online that made him realize how sculptural the form could be. “I enjoy the manipulation of colors and textures of crepe paper and creating an engaging form that is meticulously made. I liked the idea of pushing this form into the fine art world as sculpture.”
His process reflects this dedication. “The base of the form begins with papier-mâché balloons. I then use paperboard and tape to build out the form, connecting the papier-mâché forms. I use wire to support any appendages before papier-mâchéing a few final layers and adding a wire loop so it can be hung. Once the form is complete, I cover it in hand-cut crepe paper that is layered and cut with the aim to play with color and accentuate texture.”
The result is a series of creatures that look like they stepped out of folklore and fantasy. Some are whimsical and playful, others mysterious and mythological, but all carry a sense of life and movement.
