30 People Stuck In Quarantine Shared Their Most Valued Possessions

Published 4 years ago

What gives an item value – its price, its size, its rarity? Well, some people on the internet recently proved that it might be none of the above. After Twitter user Isaac Fitzgerald asked people stuck in quarantine “What’s the object in your home that means the most to you?“, instead of posting pictures of expensive diamond rings or the latest iPhones, they responded with something different.

People responded to Isaac with things of sentimental value, ranging from pictures of their relatives from the 1900s to tiny tobacco tins they used to keep their keys in as children. Isaac’s own most valued possession deserves a mention too – it’s a small sword given to him by the King of Bhutan himself over a decade ago.

In an interview with Bored Panda, Isaac mentioned he’s an author and has recently published a children’s book called How to Be a Pirate. “I’ve got two other books out all about tattoos and am working on a YA novel and an essay collection for adults titled Dirtbag, Massachusetts,” added the author.

The author said he came up with the idea for the thread while procrastinating. “Because I was traveling a bunch a few weeks ago (for my book tour), I’ve been holed up and self-quarantining for a full week now (no symptoms, just playing it safe),” said Isaac. “Anyhow, I was looking at the sword, which is displayed by my desk, and I realized that there must be so many other folks who are doing the exact same thing: staring at items in their homes that they see every day and maybe even take for granted that… they’re now going to be spending a lot more time with.”

Isaac said the sword was a birthday present that came with its own wild story. The author went to high school with Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, who just happened to have been the then-Crown Prince and now-King of Bhutan. “A little later in my 20s, I was lucky enough to visit the beautiful country of Bhutan, where I got the rare opportunity to catch up with my old friend. Our meeting coincided with my 25th birthday, which I’d planned to keep to myself, but His Majesty remembered and celebrated the occasion by gifting me with a small sword (the kind carried by most soldiers in Bhutan, I believe),” revealed Isaac. “No matter where life takes me, at least I can always say I’ve been given a sword by a king.”

Isaac says it’s “absolutely wonderful” that people are still contributing to the thread and discussing each other’s items and that he’s happy to be a part of it. “It feels like a big group project that so many different folks are contributing to, and I hope more and more people feel welcomed to join in,” concluded the author.

One day, this guy just kind of figured - "I spend most of my time on the internet anyway, why not turn it into a profession?" - and he did! Now he not only gets to browse the latest cat videos and fresh memes every day but also shares them with people all over the world, making sure they stay up to date with everything that's trending on the web. Some things that always pique his interest are old technologies, literature and all sorts of odd vintage goodness. So if you find something that's too bizarre not to share, make sure to hit him up!

Got wisdom to pour?
