Published 8 months ago

Roald Dahl was a British novelist who wrote many unforgettable children’s books in the 20th century, including Fantastic Mr. FoxMatildaJames and the Giant Peach, and many more. To introduce more children to these classic books and to encourage reading, McDonald’s of New Zealand recently replaced their Happy Meal toys with books from the author.

Jo Mitchell, the director of marketing at McDonald’s New Zealand, said that the Happy Meal Readers programme is all about helping parents to get their children to enjoy reading.

“The Roald Dahl characters are ones that many parents will have enjoyed growing up, and it’s great to play a part in introducing them to a new generation,” said Mitchell.

Although this sounds like a nice initiative on the company’s behalf, some people argued that there are better ways to encourage people to read that don’t involve unhealthy foods, such as taking them to the local library.

Nevertheless, it’s a great way to introduce children to some of the classics they might miss out on.

The books not only feature extracts from Dahl’s most famous works, such as Matilda, Fantastic Mr. Fox, Charlie and The Chocolate Factory, The BFG and others but also include many fun activities for the kids.

The books will not only help educate kids but also tackle the problem of plastic waste left over after the Happy Meal toys are thrown out.

Let’s hope other countries follow New Zealand’s example and introduce this great idea everywhere!

People on the internet seemed to enjoy the company’s idea

Aušrys Uptas

One day this guy just kind of figured "I spend most of my time on the internet anyway, why not turn it into a profession?" - and he did! Now he not only gets to browse the latest cat videos and fresh memes every day but also shares them with people all over the world, making sure they stay up to date with everything that's trending around the web. Something that always peeks his interests is old technology, literature and all sorts of odd vintage goodness so if you find something that's too bizarre not to share, make sure to hit him up!

Got wisdom to pour?
