20 Breathtaking Photos Of Abandoned Scandinavian Houses By Photographer Britt Marie Bye

Published 3 years ago

Britt Marie Bye is a Norwegian photographer who for the past couple of years has been photographing the abandoned Scandinavian wooden homes she found above the Arctic circle in Sweden and Norway. The woman even ended up falling with the unpredictable nature of the region so much, she ended up selling her apartment and moving out to live in the Arctic circle!

The photographer says that tackling a new environment and starting over wasn’t easy, as there is snow at almost any given time of the year. “But the reward of being able to spend my free time exploring the beautiful nature, and share the stories of these long-abandoned homes, makes this decision the right one,” says Britt.

Britt says that to her, photography is all about freezing a moment in time, a way to preserve both a memory and a feeling. “With my abandoned house photography I try to capture each house as I would if I photographed a person. Like a portrait,” explained the photographer.” Finding the right angle, the best light, and capturing their personality, so to speak. It might sound silly, but I do find that every house has its own personality as well as style.”

When photographing the old houses, one of the hardest parts for Britt is actually finding and reaching them. “Then it’s the weather. I don’t like to photograph when the sun’s out – I prefer my photos to have a darker melancholic look to them,” added the photographer. “So if I find a house on a sunny day I have to go back on a day with dramatic cloudy weather. No matter how far I have to drive.”

When it comes to photographing the interiors, Britt always makes sure to find the owners and get their permission, something that’s not always easy. “It’s always very difficult having to walk away from a great photo opportunity – at the same time, it’s important to show respect for other people’s property,” explained Britt. “I don’t think I’d be able to do this work if I didn’t have that work ethic.”

One day, this guy just kind of figured - "I spend most of my time on the internet anyway, why not turn it into a profession?" - and he did! Now he not only gets to browse the latest cat videos and fresh memes every day but also shares them with people all over the world, making sure they stay up to date with everything that's trending on the web. Some things that always pique his interest are old technologies, literature and all sorts of odd vintage goodness. So if you find something that's too bizarre not to share, make sure to hit him up!

Got wisdom to pour?
