Artist Crafts Giant Doilies That Reach 15ft And Form Huge Spider Webs

Published 6 years ago

Ashley V. Blalock is a Californian artist and since 2011 she has been creating unique and specific installations by filling a room with gigantic, hand-crocheted doilies. In 2014, she continued her work by naming her ongoing series “Keeping Up With Appearances” and filling rooms, galleries, walls with her meticulously crafted doilies.

Blalock’s work can be as high as 15 feet and when it fills the room it starts to resemble a giant spiders web this way creating a sense of unease for the viewer. Blalock explains her work by saying, “The doilies themselves represent a certain desire to keep up the appearance of gentility to the outside world expressed through the arrangement of objects in the domestic setting….The red color gives away the futility of such an act and hints at the unease that lurks below the surface of an obsessive need to control and arrange.”  Scroll down to see mesmerizing Blalock’s work below.
