Two Australian Friends Turned Their Van Into A Mobile Laundry For The Homeless

Published 9 years ago

Orange Sky Laundry is Australia’s first mobile laundry facility exclusively dedicated to the homeless. The social project was created by two 20-year-olds, Lucas Patchett and Nicholas Marchesi, who noticed that homeless hygiene was a serious and overlooked issue. Now the homeless finally have a convenient mobile place to get their clothes washed and dried on a regular basis.

The two friends pimped out their old white van and bought a portable generator. Then they turned to donations and got two washers and dryers, letting them wash 20 kilograms of laundry every hour. The Orange Sky Laundry was finally launched in July, 2014.

The project is now going through a trial period, operating for five days a week in Brisbane’s public spaces. The organization plans to cooperate with food donation groups so that the homeless could get something to eat while their clothes are being washed. If everything goes smoothly, the organization will start operating throughout the whole of Australia by the end of 2015.

Find out more about this noble organization and the ways that you can help it out.

“A privilege that so many of us take for granted. This is the first time Mick has been able to wash his clothes and blankets. Born in Brisbane and living on the streets Mick can’t afford to wash his clothes or transport them. Thanks for your continued support of our program. “

“Meet Ricky. He wants to thank you for all your donations and support. He sleeps rough on the street with his dad and today they were able to wash all of their clothes. “
