Photographer Creates Beautiful Flower Graves To Honor Dead Animals

Published 10 years ago

Russian photographer Maria Ionova-Gribina created this deeply sad photo series called “Natura Morta” to honor the dead animals she found during her summer bicycle rides. All of the animals pictured died of natural causes or car accidents and were found soon after their death. The flower beds and photos pay respect to the deceased animals and meditate on the cycle of life and death.

When me and my brother found a dead mole, bird or bug we buried them on the border of a forest. And we decorated the grave with flowers and stones. Probably it was a children’s curiosity, our first studies of mortality,” recalls the photographer in her artist’s statement. “In this project I work with my childhood memories and with the subject of life and death.
