25 Bizarre Scientific Animal Names That Sound Like A Bad Prank
Back in 2016, a now-famous online poll invited the public to suggest and vote on a name for a new research vessel. The clear winner was “Boaty McBoatface.” Instead of going to the main ship, though, the name was given to a yellow autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) operated by the National Oceanography Centre, which now conducts crucial, long-endurance research in Antarctic waters.
Now, when we look at a few particular official animal names, they spark a questioning reaction within us about how on earth such absurd names got approved. Scientists really took a look at certain species and landed on names like Rough-faced Shag and Bony-eared A**fish. You’d think surely there were more dignified options available.
