20 People Who Used GoFundMe For All The Wrong Reasons

Remember when the only way to get total strangers to give someone money was by physically collecting money on the streets and explaining to every single stranger you approach why this and that charity needs the money? Well, how the times have changed. There’s no more need to represent a charity to receive donations. Thanks to the Internet and creative IT heads, anyone can set up a money-raising campaign.

Initially, the crowdfunding platform GoFundMe was used for its purposes, such as to allow people to raise money to help in challenging circumstances like losing home or income, accidents, funerals, or illnesses. Now the platform is also being used for personal, and, let me stress this out, very unnecessary reasons to try and weasel out money from good scouts.

‘Don’tFundMe’ subreddit was created to name and shame the dumbest crowdfunding campaigns. Take a look at some of the most absurd GoFundMe campaigns.

On her GoFundMe page [deleted] this woman wrote:

“I am wanti,g $ to get that tattoo off my for head I want to have a better start out in life and have a second chance at life please help me I was young n dumb when I got that I’m older one looking for a job can’t get out and people call me a druggie every day of my life and being called 420 is not nice and I almost killed my self over it. ..can’t stand to look at my face anymore. .save a life save me..invest in me and I will show you I can be better with my life. ..thank you”

Aiming for $800, she raised more than $1,000 in just a few days.

“I was inspired to create /r/DontFundMe after seeing a college friend post a GoFundMe for a Christian mission trip overseas that, at worst, looked suspiciously like a vacation and, at best, looked to not be especially beneficial to the community it was supposed to help. Her campaign was never posted to the subreddit and only served as the initial inspiration.”
