15 Stunning Grid Paintings That Illuminate The Beauty Of Order And Chaos, By Stelios Pupet

Published 7 months ago

The art world is a vast and diverse realm, constantly evolving with artists pushing the boundaries of creativity. One such innovator is Stelios Pupet, a Greek painter whose unique artistic approach is shaped by the interplay of tradition and innovation.

In a recent interview with DeMilked, Stelios provides valuable insights into his creative process, shedding light on the evolution of his distinctive style over the past four years. “I had the idea to take advantage of the grid around 4 years ago while working on a digital sketch, and trying to transform it in a way to be printed as a silkscreen print,” says Stelios. Intrigued by the possibilities that grids presented, he sought to transform his sketches into silkscreen prints.

As he delved deeper into this exploration, the grid became a central element in his artistic process. Rather than imposing a rigid structure, Stelios allows the grid to guide his creative choices, giving rise to a dynamic interplay of traditional and minimalistic elements within his paintings.

“I wouldn’t say that I was influenced by something in particular. What happened is that I used to paint in a more traditional style but I was always trying to find different ways to imprint reality through my works,” he explains. While he used to paint in a more traditional style, Stelios always sought innovative methods to convey his artistic vision. The grid, which was initially a tool, became a catalyst for a transformational shift in his creative process.

“Everything happens during the process, so there is that surprising feeling, which I like,” Stelios notes. What sets this artist apart is his embrace of the unpredictable. Unlike artists who meticulously plan every stroke, Stelios allows his creations to evolve naturally. During the artistic process, he selects shapes, colors them, changes them, and brings them to life without a predefined plan. This spontaneity adds an element of surprise to his work, a quality that he values and believes contributes to the uniqueness of each piece.

“The artworks theme mostly has a figurative approach, with most of the compositions representative of women’s forms, and sometimes in “mysterious” poses, but without that being the norm,” Stelios shares. The artist’s work often gravitates towards a figurative approach, with a focus on the representation of women’s forms. The compositions are not confined to conventional norms; instead, they exude mystery and captivation. Additionally, the artist draws inspiration from nature and animals, employing them as tools to simplify images.
