Museum Of Bad Art Will Make You Wanna Unsee These Paintings

Published 7 years ago

The Museum Of Bad Art, also known as MOBA, is the first institution dedicated to bringing “the worst of art to the widest of audiences” in the world. Apparently, some art is just “too bad to ignore,” and American antique dealer Scott Wilson realized that after a particular find in the trash – ‘Lucy In The Field With Flowers’, a painting that is now considered a founding piece of the museum.

Today, the museum boasts 3 galleries in Boston, Massachusetts area, with 600 pieces and up to 70 works of bad art in display at any particular time: “We are the world’s leading authority on bad art,” museum’s spokesperson told CBS. When asked how they distinguish bad art, the woman replied: “It’s like pornography, it’s hard to define, but I know it when I see it… You just look at it, and you’re, “wait, what?’

But don’t get fooled if you think it’s easy to meet museum’s low standards – it’s a highly selective process, as they are not interested in kitsch, faked bad art or works that are just plain boring.

The institution is proud to rescue art from the public waste system (trash bins, flea markets and such), and say that featured artists are happy their works get to be displayed. It’s still a way for them to connect and communicate with the audience.

I mean, after all, it’s still art – and MOBA respects it – it’s just that this museum also celebrates the artist’s right to fail.
