4 Celebrities That Proudly Re-Wore Their Old Oscar Gowns

Published 4 years ago

The organizers of this year’s Academy Awards put a lot of effort into making the show more carbon neutral. The attendees were served plant-based vegan appetizers before the show and introduced a plant-based menu in the Luncheon. “The Academy is an organization of storytellers from around the world, and we owe our global membership a commitment to supporting the planet,” wrote the Academy of Motion Pictures, Arts, and Science in their statement. “For the past decade, the Academy has been committed to reducing its carbon footprint. For the past seven years, the Oscars show has had a net zero carbon imprint. We continue to expand our sustainability plan with the ultimate goal of becoming carbon neutral.” But it wasn’t just the organizers that wanted to be more sustainable.

Some celebrities attending the award ceremony decided to try a more eco-friendly approach. Instead of buying expensive new gowns, they chose to reuse their old ones. Check them out in the gallery below!

Elizabeth Banks

The beautiful red dress Elizabeth Banks wore to the ceremony was the same one she wore 16 years ago. “It’s gorgeous and it fits…so why not wear it again?!” wrote the actress on a recent Instagram post.

The actress wrote that by reusing the dress she wanted to “bring global awareness to the importance of sustainability in fashion and consumerism as it relates to climate change, production & consumption, ocean pollution, labor & women.”

Jane Fonda

Actress and climate change activist Jane Fonda also chose to re-wear the same dress she has before.

Fonda also wore accompanying jewelry by Pomellato as it “uses responsible, ethically harvested gold and sustainable diamonds”.

The actress has also previously stated that she is never going to buy clothes again.

Arianna Huffington

Journalist Arianna Huffington wore the same Valentino dress she wore back in 2013 and looked as glamorous as ever.

Joaquin Phoenix

Back in January, actor Joaquin Phoenix stated that he will be wearing the same Stella McCartney tux throughout the whole awards season.

Phoenix is well known for his activism and reusing the same clothes was his statement in support of sustainable fashion.

Instead of re-wearing the same gowns, other celebrities chose to turn them into new ones.

Aušrys Uptas

One day, this guy just kind of figured - "I spend most of my time on the internet anyway, why not turn it into a profession?" - and he did! Now he not only gets to browse the latest cat videos and fresh memes every day but also shares them with people all over the world, making sure they stay up to date with everything that's trending on the web. Some things that always pique his interest are old technologies, literature and all sorts of odd vintage goodness. So if you find something that's too bizarre not to share, make sure to hit him up!

Got wisdom to pour?
