Russian winter wonderland in portraits

Published 7 years ago

When the temperatures drop down mid-November or early December and everything gets covered by a thick fluffy snow blanket, the winter descends on the Russian land, transforming natural, rural and urban landscapes, as well as people’s lives.

What appears to like a winter wonderland a lot of people never get to experience throughout their lifetime is a norm for people, who live on the expanses of Easter Europe, Central and Eastern Asia, and the territories above the Arctic Circle. Severe temperature conditions and the amount of snowfall people get throughout the winter months ranges depending on the area, but generally, no Russian has to worry about the possibility of having a white Christmas or the New Years (which is more broadly celebrated than Christmas), as the absence of snow so far in December is rather a quite rare occasion than a rule.

Snowy cities, villages, and forests turn into perfect backdrops for photographers to shoot special portraits. Traditional wooden houses and clothes, trees in snowy caps, winter-associated animals in fairytale-like setups, talented and skilled photography masters able not only to capture the best moments and expressions, but also adjust to special characteristics of winter light and dazzling white landscape, the amazing job of makeup artists, who create unique looks for the shoots, and astonishingly beautiful people posing in a harmony with the nature, which fell into a deep winter sleep…That’s everything that made these amazing Russian winter themed portraits so breathtaking.

The photographers tried to showcase the beauty of severe climate and the people, who managed to adjust to it ages ago and are able to comfortably live in it. Traditional Russian village house setups and colorful national winter clothes people used to wear back in the day with a hint of modern style, kids bundled up in multiple layers of warm sweaters, coats and hats protecting them from the wind and the frost and somehow making them look even cuter, contribute to the special atmosphere and the charm of the winter portraits you may see below.

Some of them capture the rare wildlife, which cannot exist without the cold and everything it brings to the nature, and authentic nationalities, who live above the Arctic Circle and who managed to preserve the traditional way of life, inherited from their ancestors.

Lastly, the famous beauty of Slavonic women finishes the masterpieces.
