14 Beautiful Embroideries That Look Stunningly Lifelike By Katrin Vates
The meticulous attention to detail that Ekaterina Sinchinova or as she’s known online, Katrin Vates, pays to her embroidery stands out in her beautiful embroidery. The Russian artist who currently resides in Rockville, Maryland has an aptitude for details and anyone with an eye for realism art will appreciate her special talents.
Sinchinova explained to DeMilked how her journey with art began, saying, “I’ve been embroidering for about seven years. I started during my maternity leave when I was living in Russia. Initially, I just wanted to decorate my apartment with some embroidered cushions. At the time, we were living in Siberia, a cold region where the landscape is grey for most of the year. I really wanted to look at something green and blooming, at least in my room, that’s why I started embroidering landscapes.”

The self-taught artist’s creations follows a unique hyper-realistic technique that may have been inspired by her background in design and illustration. Speaking about the influences that motivate her art, Sinchinova revealed, “Although I can draw and have an art education, I don’t like messing with paints. Also, I’m too bad at sewing to create something beautiful. Embroidery is the only thing I can do in the field of needlework, since working with threads is similar to working with paints, but nothing gets dirty and I can take my work with me anywhere.”

The handcrafted pieces are visually stunning to behold, displaying an impressive aim for detail and resemblance to reality. These photorealistic embroideries are often inspired by the artist’s environment according to a statement in which she declared, “I often embroider the places where I live, and these are the most ordinary urban places, of which there are thousands all over America. Like many people, I like to admire the ocean, mountains, and forests, but I don’t have to go somewhere to get inspiration, it’s enough to walk close to home. I appreciate urban greenery no less than the greenery of wild nature, because first of all, thanks to ordinary urban lawns, I began to embroider my first landscape.”

Sinchinova says that she tries to imitate what she sees on her cloth canvases using stitches that she herself creates depending on the requirement of the piece, “My inspiration is greenery along the roads, city parks, squares, and Asian Art, especially Japanese prints – thanks to them, I came up with several techniques in embroidery, even though threads and paints are two different things. I make landscapes using the thinnest needles, and several types of stitches. I use threads for hand embroidery and machine sewing, which helps me to reach a realistic effect in my pictures.”

Speaking about her creative process, Sinchinova detailed, “I draw a sketch on the fabric, but it isn’t a detailed drawing because I want to leave opportunities to change something in the embroidery process if I need to. My working process is like a journey that allows route changes”. She further added, “Colors and textures of threads play a huge role in my embroidery. Choosing threads is crucial, especially when creating landscapes. Different threads and stitches can mimic depth, light, and texture. Some of my pictures appeared because I discovered beautiful threads and wanted to embroider them as soon as possible. Also, choosing fabric is an important part of the process. The surface shouldn’t be too textured, but also not too smooth, it should be uniform, thick and be an ideal background for miniature stitches.”
