25 Old Playgrounds That Make Us Wonder How Babies Back Then Even Survived
Reflecting on my childhood, I remember seeing a kid fall from the monkey bars, only to be told to dust himself off and keep playing. We all bore the marks of our wild adventures—calloused hands, scraped knees, and bruised shins.
Playgrounds today highlight just how much has changed, with a much stronger emphasis on health and emotional well-being. Modern designs stand in sharp contrast to our old play spaces, which look positively safe compared to the perilous playgrounds that were around before the ’80s. Take a look at the photo gallery below to see just how much playgrounds worldwide have evolved over the years.

We had this insane jungle gym that we called “the bars”. A big fountain and a little creek that ran through the park under the bars and into a brick lined pond. It was the best playground ever. Bar tag was the top activity. There were spots you could make a leap of faith to avoid getting tagged. Knocked the wind out of myself several times when I missed the grab.
